Havisham - Havisham - Higher English Revision - BBC Bitesize.
Often cited as Dickens’s first convincing female character, Estella is a supremely ironic creation, one who darkly undermines the notion of romantic love and serves as a bitter criticism against the class system in which she is mired. Raised from the age of three by Miss Havisham to torment men and “break their hearts,” Estella wins Pip’s deepest love by practicing deliberate cruelty.
Estella Havisham Most readers are appalled at the cold-hearted and cruel ways of Estella, but any criticism directed at her is largely undeserved. She was simply raised in a controlled environment where she was, in essence, brainwashed by Miss Havisham. Nonetheless, her demeanor might lead one to suspect that she was a girl with a heart of ice. Estella is scornful from the moment she is.
Estella is cruel and she was raised to be this way. Prior to her wedding, broken-hearted Miss Havisham adopted Estella. And the older Estella grew, the more she was taught to despise those of the opposite gender. For example when Pip had come over to play cards with Estella, Miss Havisham whispered into Eestella’s ear to break his heart.
In this chapter both Estella and Miss Havisham make Pip aware of his status and as he gets older he wants to change alot and he starts to look down on people who as a child helped him alot and were very close to him. They both treat Pip in a terrible manor as Miss Havisham wants Estella to break Pips heart. Pips feelings for Estella also affects his adult life because he wants to impress her.
Having Estella she either had a maid or when Estella came of age she would start caring for herself. When Pip starts coming over she also gets him to do little things for her and makes him play with Estella. As Pip ages he still continuously cares for Miss Having but out of love and the feeling of responsibility. She clearly relies on others but not as much as you would think. Each year on her.
The relationship between Estella and Miss Havisham in Great Expectations is one of teacher and pupil. In bringing up Estella, Miss Havisham is teaching her how to take revenge on the entire male.
